The St. Croix County Treasurer’s Office is encouraging residents who pay their property taxes by mail to be aware of a recent U.S. Postal Service (USPS) policy change that may affect when envelopes are postmarked.
In August 2025, the USPS implemented a nationwide change to when postmarks are applied. Instead of being stamped when mail is first received by the Postal Service, postmarks are now applied at regional sorting centers, which can occur days after an item is placed in a mailbox.
Because Wisconsin law considers a tax payment timely based on the USPS postmark date, this change means payments mailed close the deadline could be considered late, even if they were placed in a mailbox before that date.

Tips to Avoid Late Payments
- Mail payments well in advance of deadlines.
- Consider paying online if you are close to the deadline.
- If mailing near the deadline, bring your payment to the post office and request it be postmarked while you are there, or send it by certified mail.
- Use caution with bank bill-pay services, which often mail payments in bulk and may not guarantee timely postmarking.
