The St. Croix County Community Development Department ensures public health and environmental protection by managing septic systems. We issue permits for new septic system installations and maintain records of existing system maintenance throughout the county. Below, you'll find detailed information on the processes for obtaining new permits and maintaining current systems, designed to help you navigate these essential services efficiently. Why did I receive a Septic System Maintenance Notice?
St. Croix County records indicate that we have not received a sanitary inspection report for your septic system in the last three years. The Community Development Department has been given a mandate (June 2005) by the State of Wisconsin to accurately keep a record of the maintenance on all private wastewater treatment systems (septic systems) in St. Croix County. Inspections may be conducted by a master plumber, POWTS inspector, septage servicing operator, or POWTS maintainer. The components listed on the back must be inspected. This notice complies with WI Administrative Code SPS 383, which mandates that private onsite wastewater treatment systems be serviced or inspected at least once every three years unless otherwise specified in a management plan.
How can I view the Sanitary Maintenance Record or Sanitary Permit Documents myself?
St. Croix County uses Ascent Permit Management System for storing and viewing existing zoning and sanitary records. Follow these steps to look up your sanitary maintenance records yourself.
- Go to the permit & maintenance tracking site Ascent Permit Management.
- Enter the “Parcel ID” or “Site Address” for the system in question & click “Find Now”.
- On the bottom left click on the Permit Number starting “SAN”
- For Maintenance Records, click on “Maintenance” near the bottom and it will reveal the maintenance history of the current permit.
- For copies of the initial permit and other related docs, click on “Document” on the right of the screen.
How do I get my Septic System Inspected and/or Pumped?

What if my septic System was serviced in the past 3 years and I received a maintenance notice anyway?
If your system was serviced in the past three years, contact your septic service provider and ask them to file a maintenance report with the county. If you are unable to obtain the inspection report, St. Croix County can accept an invoice or receipt that contains a date of service.
Sanitary System Permit Information
A State Sanitary Permit is required for the installation of a private on-site wastewater treatment system (POWTS). A County Sanitary Permit is required for the repair, reconnection, or rejuvenation of a POWTS, or the installation of a non-plumbing sanitation (i.e. privy, composting toilet, etc.)
A Sanitary Permit is required before obtaining a building permit from your local municipality. A Sanitary Permit may only be submitted by a licensed plumber. Staff will conduct at least one inspection for all work requiring a sanitary permit.

To streamline our process and better serve contractors and plumbers, the St. Croix County Community Development Department has moved to online scheduling for POWTS inspections.
